ElRose Apartments Change Ownership

Posted 2/5/2016

By Jackie Nelson

ElRose Apartments, located at 305 E. Academy, have been owned by Lorna and Lonnie Guhr for 22 years. However, the apartment complex has been sold to Jerry and Michelle Kepley, who live in Harvey County, according to Lorna Guhr.

Michelle Kepley said the couple took over the property on Feb. 1.

“I have been in contact with our residents and they are aware of our expectations  as the new landlords and owners,” she said.

Guhr said the couple decided to sell the property “at the end of 2015.”

Harvey County public record 2015 appraised value put the three acre property at a value of $577,690.

ElRose Apartments first two buildings were constructed in 1965 and two more buildings were added in 1974.

There are 36 units in the complex with an average rent of $450 per month according to Guhr.  However Guhr declined to give the number of tenants currently living in the apartment complex.

“The new owners have indicated that there won't be any major changes in the near future,” said Guhr.

Gish Fabrication Closing

Posted 2/5/2016

By Jackie Nelson

Gish Fabrication will be closing its doors after seven years in business.

Owner and operator Duane Gish said the business has stopped accepting new contracts.

“We should be ready to stop all operations in a few weeks,” he said.

Gish will be rejoining local builder King Construction.

“I worked for King from 2002-2010.  I left King to pursue my dream of building a business.

“The decision to close our business was a very difficult one.  In the end, we decided that this would be the best option for our family and I am very excited to be rejoining the team at King Construction,” he said.

Founded by Gish and his wife, Kelly, the business began as a hobby-shop.

“I have always had a desire to build and create.  I have also been intrigued by the entrepreneurial spirit.  I knew that, if I didn’t attempt to create my own business, I would always regret it,” said Gish.

The business grew from a single-man operation to employing two full-time and one part time employee.

The business will be liquidated.

“Our preference would be to sell the business intact, but our timeline for this transition is pretty short compared to the time it takes to market and sell a business,” he said.

The business location will once again be open for rent.

Despite founding a business during an economic downturn, Gish said his endeavor has been largely successful.

Swather Scholars Come Out Of CKL Meet With Winning Record

Posted 2/5/2016

By Record Staff

Ten Scholars' Bowl teams from the Central Kansas League met at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the chance to become the League Scholars' Bowl Champion.

The teams were put into two pools of five. Hesston lost its first match against Larned.

The Swathers won the next two matches against Hoisington and Pratt, but lost the fourth round against Haven.

Although the final round against Halstead was a victory, the 3-2 record was not enough to place the team into the finals.

Larned and Haven moved into the finals against Smoky Valley and Sterling. The Swather Scholars came out with a winning record, which is better than last year.

“Last year, we left the tournament with a record of two wins and three losses,” said Coach Patrice LeFevre.

The Swathers then, went on to win the Regional tournament and competed at State.

“We still have high hopes that we can perform well at Regionals despite the last few disappointing tournament results. We just have to bring our A game and be careful of underestimating the opponent,” said LeFevre.

LeFevre said the key to success will be a combination of their teamwork skills to work together to discuss answers and instinct to answer before the opponent hits the buzzer.

Team members were Tessa Isaac (captain), Marieke van Bergeijk, Megan Baldauf, Reuben Peachey-Stoner, Sam Hunsberger, and Sam Bartel.

The Regional tournament is Thurs., Feb. 4, at Belle Plaine.
